Flood Solid Color Deck & Siding Stain Application Advice

WHERE TO USE FLOOD SOLID STAIN

New or weathered exterior wood; Previously stained exterior surfaces; Siding; Outdoor furniture; Decks, docks and other horizontal surfaces; Fences, lattice and other vertical surfaces; Trim boards, outdoor wood furniture; Weathered masonry surfaces
DO NOT USE INDOORS

SURFACE PREPARATION

General Directions

Surfaces to be coated should be clean and dry before applying Flood Solid Color Stain:

  • Pressure wash to remove excess dirt and other contamination
  • Remove mildew with a mixture of 1 part chlorine bleach and 4 parts water, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.
  • Allow 2-3 days dry time after cleaning.
  • Spot prime knots and bare metal with Flood Solid Color Stain before general coating.

New smooth cedar see bold note below.

New Decking

  • Allow new pressure treated decking to dry out for 6-8 weeks before applying Flood Solid Color Stain.
  • Allow new smooth cedar deck lumber to weather for one year before applying Flood Solid Color Stain.

NOTE: The mill glaze and natural oils in new smooth cedar prevent strong adhesion of any coating, so a coating applied to new smooth cedar may eventually peel. To minimize peeling on siding, first wash the siding with a 1:6 mixture of PowerLift and water and allow the wood to dry. To prevent peeling on decks, apply Seasonite New Wood Treatment as soon as the deck is built. After one year, clean with a 1:6 ratio of PowerLift and water or a 1:4 ratio of Dekswood and water and apply Flood Solid Color Stain.
